Why Measure Viscosity?
The thought that “you cannot manage if you cannot measure” is nowhere more applicable than in the field of fluid viscosity. With applications ranging from industrial processes to laboratory scientific research, the ability to gather data on a material’s viscosity gives manufacturers and scientists important information about the product.
Data acquired on a material’s rheological characteristics is valuable in predicting how a substance can be pumped or poured, as well as giving an insight into its performance in coating operations or the ease with which it may be processed.
The relationship between rheology and other product characteristics very often makes the measurement of viscosity the most sensitive and/or convenient way of detecting changes in density, solid content, stability or molecular weight. For this reason, viscosity meters are one of the most valuable tools found in Quality Control, where raw materials must be consistent from batch to batch.
